Is Your Farm STORM READY??

Stay prepared for hurricanes, winter storms, and weather emergencies with this quick checklist!

Farmstead & Buildings

  •  Secure buildings & equipment - close barn doors, close and brace greenhouses, tie down loose items. 
  • Backup power- test generators, stock extra fuel (store safely).   
  • Protect water supply - insulate pipes, secure pumps, fill backup storage tanks 

Crops & Fields

  • Harvest early- pick ripe produce ahead of storm.
  • Cover or protect- secure row covers, remove lightweight structures that may blow away.
  • Equipment ready- check fuel and tires for tractors, ATVs, and field vehicles.

Business Continuity

  • Farm records- back up crop, livestock, and financial records (digital+ paper copies).
  • Communication plan - list emergency contacts for workers, suppliers, veterinarians, and customers.
  • Insurance check - review farm, crop, and equipment coverage for storm-related losses.

Funding for On-Farm Conservation with EQIP!

The Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) program is one of NRCS' most popular tools for farmers who want to help conserve natural resources.  Farmers can apply to adopt certain conservation practices on their land, and receive an EQIP contract for technical and financial assistance related to implementing those practices.  Click here for payment rates for conservation  practices in South Carolina.
